Interesting.  What band do they typically transmit on?

I had no idea this was going on.  Wish I'd heard of it sooner.

Amateur Radio Traffic Handling for New (and not so new) Hams

Chris Swisher

I would like to invite all members of the CMRA and surrounding amateur radio operators to join me Wednesday nights on 146.76 (-600) PL 127.3 for a training opportunity on formal message handling. Have you ever wondered how a radiogram is composed, transmitted or received? How radiograms find their way across the continent (and world) to people who may or may not be hams? Why does the structure of a message promote error free exchange? The answers to these and other obscure facts will be presented in sessions after the weekly net on the Columbia repeater on a weekly basis. If you can participate, there will be certificates awarded to those who demonstrate a knowledge, skills and aptitude for providing a critical public service in Central Missouri. The sessions will be limited to thirty minutes, and questions and comments are encouraged. Please join us this Wednesday for an introduction and explanation of the coming (free) class.

ISS SSTV coming up

There will be some opportunities coming up in the Columbia area to listen..here are the times.
Aug 1 - 10:01PM (fair-to-good sighting)
Aug 2 - 9:13PM (fair-to-good sighting)
Aug 3 - 9:59PM (very good sighting)
Aug 4 - 9:10pm (very good sighting, however the ISS may have shut down ops by this time)

SSTV Event planned for Early August
ARISS News Release
July 30, 2019

ARISS plans to celebrate the life and accomplishments of astronaut, scientist and ham radio pioneer Owen Garriott with a commemorative SSTV event featuring images from Garriott’s work with ham radio during his missions in space. This event is currently scheduled to begin on August 1 at 09:40 UTC and ends at 18:15 UTC on August 4. Please make note that the content of these upcoming SSTV transmissions may change. An update is expected after Friday, July 26 as to what the image content will be for the August 1-4 dates. If this change takes place, the Owen Garriott image transmissions will be postponed until another event can be scheduled toward the end of August.

Transmissions will be sent at 145.800 MHz FM in the SSTV mode PD-120. Once received, images can be posted and viewed by the public at http://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/index.php and you can receive a special SSTV ARISS Award for posting your image. See https://ariss.pzk.org.pl/sstv/ for details. Also for simplicity, we have added a new information tab for SSTV events, under the General Contacts pulldown menu at www.ariss.org . The latest updates can also be found at the ARISS Facebook site Amateur Radio On The International Space Station (ARISS) and on Twitter @ ARISS_status.

Remember: DO NOT just bring up a talk group to listen. If you key up a talk group it has to be with the intention to have a conversation. Thanks for the article.  I have never heard of this before, but I see how it is possible with shearing strata of rocks and piezo electric effects.

It is disconcerting when anything interrupts HF radio, especially during major earthquakes (and I assume aftershocks).  I printed out the article in Scientific American and will read it later.

This came to me from my old ARC in Hayward, CA.

Very interesting.  I have never heard of this before.
I doubt it affected line of sight radio, I think it would be hard to Raf disrupt a repeater, as long as it has ax power and the antenna isn't laying on the ground.

Perhaps for our 120 mile links need more power?  Say a kw?  For 40 perhaps a hillbilly beam.  IE three vertical antennas space out to make a beam, pointed to where we need to get to.
