While I dislike the potential for this to discourage some from becoming new operators, I think that this is a responsible move - IF it's truly a cost-based fee. - Best Regards, Gary D Vaught We can engineer a solution to nearly any problem you can accurately define. - somewhat anonymous

Re: K0SI packet down?

Hi Don,
Thanks for your response. You got me thinking about all the settings i've tweaked over the past few days and i found that moving my dcd threshold a little bit in soundmodem and bumping up the tx delay to 300ms helped tremendously. I've never been able to hit K0SI-10 reliably from here, so thanks for confirming that it's expected due to terrain. I can pretty reliably bounce through MMJY or MJEF depending on propagation and just tried both with the settings tweaked with no problems. User error! -Ryan KE5SUI

That's good news, William. Willam was an enthusiastic and successful member of the Tech class taught by Myron and I in autumn of 2017 William, I'll leave it to others for the answers you seek, but would add the importance of grounding and bonding the tower, to provide lightning and other protections thru grounding and bonding techniques. Mac, K4CHS, is an expert on the grounding of towers, but another source is that ARRL has a small book on "Grounding and Bonding". They also have a text on towers by guys who do that for a living (e.g., W2GD). Also, we have a few experienced "tower guys" in the club who may be free to help. Jim, N0SSM

For self-supporting Rohn G series. If you are somewhere that needs a permit, the drawings and specs from the manufacturer help a ton. 73 de Bryan, k0emt

Antenna Tower Installation
William Johnson
My in-laws and I are finally putting up a tower. The tower is a Rohn 25G that is 80'. The plan is to bury the 1st half of the 1st section in concrete and the tower will be attached to the building at approximately 20' up. My question is how big of a concrete foundation do we need to pour for the tower, and also do we need to put guy wires farther up, like at the top?

Re: K0SI packet down?
Don - KM0R
Hi Ryan,
Based on your location from the FCC database, you’ll have a better shot at hitting MJEF than going direct to K0SI-10 due to terrain. A directional antenna might help that some as well.
Try turning up the volume on your radio (assuming you are not using the speaker jack to hook up to your TNC), then listen to the exchange between you and K0SI-10 or MJEF. Do you hear the other end respond each time you transmit? If not, the other end may not be hearing your transmissions (or may not be decoding them). Also, you’ll want to be sure that you are not overdriving your TNC with audio from the radio. Overdriving the audio will distort the audio and make it hard for the other end to decode your transmissions. You can also try lengthening your TX Delay setting a bit, usually 300ms is enough but no more than 450ms in my experience with packet. If the TX Delay is too short, the other end doesn’t have time to sync onto your transmissions.
Hope this helps!

I swear I replied to this already but I'm also having trouble. It takes about 5 attempts to completely send/receive. Seems like k0si-10 gives up and doesn't finish the transaction.

K0SI-10 trouble
Ryan Raney
I've been trying to reply to the latest post about this but it looks like it's not getting approved.
I'm still having trouble connecting to winlink on K0SI-10. It seems like it gives up after a bit and I don't get the message 0 sent 0 received etc. It's taken 4 or 5 tries to get a successful connection. Is anyone else having this problem? -Ryan KE5SUI

It took me 4 tries to get it to work, I tried direct twice, I tried through MMJY, and finally through MJEF and it finally sent my test message

Thanks Fred, Can't explain this one. It worked for me. When I went remote to the node I saw that you had connected, but couldnot tell why you had trouble. It worked for me even going through MJEF (accidentally). Bill

Tyree hardware closing

Hi
From a conversation with one of the owners in a checkout line at Westlakes I found out that Tyree hardware is closing. They have a mix of stock unlike Ace or Lowes or Home Depot. If you need anything from them this might be your last chance to find it in Columbia. 73 Fred AE0FD
