Hi Here are two videos giving graphic presentation of the gory statistical issues of a pandemic: This first one has dozens of animated graphs showing the qualitative effect of various epidemic reduction strategies, e.g. social distancing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxAaO2rsdIs Simulating an epidemic The second shows a different type of graph which does not have time as the x axis and high lights the effectiveness of a science based approach to the pandemic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54XLXg4fYsc How Soon Will COVID-19 Peak? Informative type of pandemic statistical graph
All See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54XLXg4fYsc How Soon Will COVID-19 Peak? (And How To Tell) With this type of graph we can see how South Korea and China have decided to bail out of the pandemic roller coaster sooner than other countries. This graph will show by simple indication when we have finally joined them. By all means check out their sources of data before forming an opinion, on this or on any other issue. 73 Fred AE0FD

Beware clickbait, surveys, ads and polls
I'm on social media so I can keep up with family and friends, especially our grandkids. They're out there knowing there is extra time on our hands now. I've noticed a huge surge in polls, ads, offers, and surveys. Common sense should rule. E.g., many polls and surveys want your income, email and and other PII. Just be extra careful out there. Medical Hope is coming -
For the past couple of weeks, I have been watching efforts to find a medical solution to the Wuhan Virus. First on Youtube, then on the news, then it popped up during the Vice President's daily update, three days ago.
The French started a human trial, more than two weeks ago, and are reporting very positive results. The study is entitled, "Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin (Z-pak) as a treatment of Covid-19: results of an open label non-randomized clinical trial." The combination of both drugs produces 100 percent cure in five days compared to a control group that was still testing positive over the same time period. But the fantastic news is that both drugs are already FDA approved, and President Trump is already having the FDA evaluate this for Wuhan Virus application. This came up during his press conference, a couple of days ago.
Ten thousand units of this drug have already been sent to New York city, and they begin using it today. We should start hearing results in about one week.
Hydroxychloroquine has already been used in New Orleans to benefit critical cases, and last night Laura Ingraham interviewed a doctor that has applied the above mentioned drugs to 350 patients.
Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug, developed after WW-II, and it and Azithromycin are cheap, off patent drugs, whose efficacy and side effects are well know
So, "keep the faith." Good news is coming soon, and we are going to beat this pandemic.

Re: This was really great thanks
I have three hand held. Two baofengs and one wouxoun. Seating about ten foot from the paper shredder, I can turn it on using my baofengs. I don't have that problem with the wouxoun. When doing this low tec., test, I am using programmed repeater frequencies. Now you can analyze this all you want. That is my story and I am staying the course.

I'd suggest asking around the guys in the
club/group. A lot of the guys who have been doing
this for a couple of years (or decades) have HTs and
mobiles that they might let go for under a couple
hundred dollars. I got my first HT from a club
member, and added an aftermarket antenna - it served
me well for a couple of years as long as I stayed
within transmit range of the repeater.
The $35 Baofeng looks appealing, but you really
need to know what you're doing there or it can
encourage some undesirable habits.
But that's all just my opinion. Welcome to

Re: This was really great thanks
This is Deja Vu at its finest. Several of the veteran Hams (I’m not One) have been discussing that radio the past couple years. We found them being sold at Walmart where the toys are advertising as walkie talkies.... Nothing about needing a license to use on the label, sold in 2 per pack and 4 per pack. Besides that we put it on a spectrum analyzer. Found the same results. The Anytone radio is a good handheld and for a bonus you get the Digital. Several folks sell them, Most have supported Bridgecom.

Re: This was really great thanks

Boback
The radio I have available to any new HAM that would like to have
it, is a Wouxun KG-UVD1P dual band. It is one of the unlocked units
I have any used it with CERT, Columbia Fire Department (with
permission during CERT Events) and other activities. It does have a
bunch of frequencies already pre-programmed (I will provide a list,
and may No-No frequencies already blocked for transmit) and is a
good HT for a beginner. All of the below are good things to
consider.
Again, free to any new HAM. Used it, program it, and when you
upgrade, either return it or pass it on to somebody else. Maybe this
is a radio for the club to hold onto and loan it for beginners.

P.S. I am not a club member as my available time does not allow me
to attend meetings, nets, and functions.

Re: This was really great thanks
Wow, Chris. You just like poking the bear, don't you?
My understanding is that SOME of the Baofeng models do not PREVENT you from transmitting in certain, prohibited frequencies. In other words, they will allow you to transmit on frequencies where it is illegal for amateur license operators to transmit. I've read a few articles, and a lot of opinions, which say that this makes the radio illegal. I'm not a lawyer and I've not seen a conclusive ruling from the FCC, but I do believe there is a difference between the radio being illegal and the radio allowing an uninformed or malicious operator to perform an illegal act.

I recommend the Wouxun. The Beofeng is illegal. You might invest in the longest antenna you can find. 73', km0mvr.
I'd suggest asking around the guys in the club/group. A lot of the guys who have been doing this for a couple of years (or decades) have HTs and mobiles that they might let go for under a couple hundred dollars. I got my first HT from a club member, and added an aftermarket antenna - it served me well for a couple of years as long as I stayed within transmit range of the repeater. The $35 Baofeng looks appealing, but you really need to know what you're doing there or it can encourage some undesirable habits. But that's all just my opinion. Welcome to amateur radio!!!

Re: Some Good News - reference.
Hello, all. Haven't been on the call-ins for a couple years. Moved, then moved again. And I move one last time this Friday. Ugg!
Happily I'm retiring end of April and plan to focus on more fun things like HAM.
Hopefully by then the gathering bans will be lifted. If not, I'll attend when they start up again.

Re: Some Good News - reference.
This is why non medical educated people talking and giving there take on a medical study is a dangerous thing. No news agency especially a talking head should be doing that. . That includes anyone saying they know more than an infectious disease physician who is respected throughout the world.

CMRA and BCARES brothers and sisters:
Medical Hope is coming -
For the past couple of weeks, I have been watching efforts to find a medical solution to the Wuhan Virus. First
on Youtube, then on the news, then it popped up during the Vice President's daily update, three days ago.
The French started a human trial, more than two weeks ago, and are reporting very positive results. The study
is entitled, "Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin (Z-pak) as a treatment of Covid-19: results of an open label
non-randomized clinical trial." The combination of both drugs produces 100 percent cure in five days compared
to a control group that was still testing positive over the same time period. But the fantastic news is that both
drugs are already FDA approved, and President Trump is already having the FDA evaluate this for Wuhan
Virus application. This came up during his press conference, a couple of days ago.
Ten thousand units of this drug have already been sent to New York city, and they begin using it today. We should
start hearing results in about one week.
Hydroxychloroquine has already been used in New Orleans to benefit critical cases, and last night Laura
Ingraham interviewed a doctor that has applied the above mentioned drugs to 350 patients.
Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug, developed after WW-II, and it and Azithromycin are cheap,
off patent drugs, whose efficacy and side effects are well know
So, "keep the faith." Good news is coming soon, and we are going to beat this pandemic.
